Ron Rolheiser, OMI, author of many books including THE HOLY LONGING, says spirituality is about "what we do with the fire inside . . . about what we do with our spirits, our souls."
In THE HOLY LONGING, he identifies four non-negotiable pillars
of the spiritual life. "Only when all four of these are present
in our lives are we healthy, as Christians and as human beings."
1. Private prayer and private morality.
2. Social Justice.
3. Mellowness of Heart and Spirit.
4. Community as a Constitutive Element of True Worship.
This is what Yahweh asks of you: only this,
to act justly,
to love tenderly and
to walk humbly with your God. (Amos 6:8)
