Chris and I
Chris and I recently attended the celebration of life for Mary Luke Tobin SL,
who died on August 24, 2006 at the age of 98. In addition to her great
leadership of women religious, her attendance at Vatican II as an observer, her
teaching and spiritual direction accomplishments, peace activism, and commitment to interfaith dialogue, she was also a friend to Edwina Gateley and all of VMM. Following is her favorite quote from Karl Rahner SJ and a piece from her book, Hope is an Open Door. May it steady your post election days.
"Every human person is an event of the free, unmerited, forgiving, radical,
and absolute self-communication of God." Karl Rahner SJ
"I am the door," Jesus said. In this metaphor I have found both mystery and
invitation: The door and the speaker are one. The door invites in and
beckons out. "I am the way."...
“We are invited to go through the door to an unknown destination--not only
from day to day, from year to year, but to the end of our lives. The trust,
confidence, and courage that enable us to go through the "little doors" and
experience the "little deaths" of daily living somehow rehearse us for the opening
of that final door...
We know that we do not go through the door alone, or first. First through
the door into the Kingdom, says Jesus, will go the poor, the blind, the lame,
the oppressed. But if we have accepted the invitation to accompany them by
compassion, and to relieve their oppression by action, this door will welcome us
also”.
