12 18, 06 Christmas Cards
Today I received some Christmas cards. I treasure Hank Zyp's drawings
- not as perfect now that he's had a stroke, but as touching as ever.
This year's card includes a poem by Dom Helder Camara, the Brazilian
bishop who was as small, humble and poor as the poor with whom he lived.
”Some people still have the impression
that Christ's liberation is a spiritual
liberation, the liberation from sin.
But when you read the Gospel carefully
you discover Christ was challenging
the worst domination of his time -
theocracy, pharisaic, authorities
that were oppressing the people
in the name of God.
The day someone discovers how
to unify, without uniting,
the different groups of every
country, of every continent,
of every race and religion,
then we will have found a strength
that is more powerful even than
nuclear power - the strength
of love”.
That is where the real strength lies.
