Saturday I was winding my way down a crowded aisle of the farmers'
market when I heard a man behind me exclaim: "They don't make them
any cuter than this." In a stroller, the cutest little girl made me
marvel at the beauty of life, all life. All week we saw on TV another
beautiful little girl, Madeleine, who disappeared in Portugal. Donors
including businesses pledged over $6 million to find her.
Last month the Africa Progress Panel, headed by Kofi Annan, reported
that the G8 countries had so far contributed only 10% of the target
to which they committed themselves at the Gleneagles summit in 2005,
when they agreed to boost aid to $50 billion a year by 2010. It's
estimated that 28 million Africans have HIV/AIDS - this means that
more than 28 million children are affected - some have the disease,
some are orphaned, some have to go out to work and cannot get an
education, some take care of younger siblings, many suffer grievous
depravation.
I recalled the words of an Alberta teacher: "We need to see each
other as interconnected. What happens in my family and community
affects the world, and what happens in the world affects my community
and family."
