We ask our applicants to:

Be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada.

Have a belief and commitment to Christian faith and tradition.

Be in good physical and psychological health.

Have a sensitivity and appreciation for all people regardless of age, sex, religion, race, sexual orientation or culture.

Be committed to ecumenical mission.

Be committed to and willing to live a simple lifestyle.

Be committed to learn about community and mission.

Be at least 23 years of age (although we do make exceptions on an individual basis for recent college graduates who have had experience and studies in Latin America.

Have a college degree.

Be committed to learning a new language, if needed.

In addition to the above requirements and qualifications, a VMM missioner needs a loving knowledge of her/himself and a genuine concern for others. Working, living, and learning in a cross-cultural setting demands that the missioner listen first, and then act — remaining open to different ways of living and perceiving the world. Flexibility and a sense of humor are a must. They provide the missioner with an ongoing openness to entering a new culture as a stranger and a guest in a new land.
